Google Docs

I managed to create a free account in ‘Google Docs’ and create a test document or two. I discovered how useful ‘Google Docs’ can be in creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations online. I also investigated ‘Zoho Writer’, ‘Omnidrive’ and ‘Box.net’. ‘Zoho Writer’ is an online word processor in which you can access documents from anywhere, create and edit documents, collaborate editing documents, and share documents. ‘Omnidrive’ is an online storage company using a single multi-platform product that aggregates storage into a single place, allowing users to access, share, and publish any of their data and content. ‘Box.net’ is an online file system that allows users to store, access, and share files remotely. Its services include online storage, file hosting, and file sharing.

My Space

MySpace is being used as a social networking website offering an interactive user-generated network of friends, personal profiles, groups, blogs, photos, music and video on an international scale. Useful headings for this library can include: blurb, About this Library, blogs, discussion sites, newsletters, comments and bulletin board. Many other libraries have their own MySpace pages. Myspace is primarily a platform to promote any person or organisation and move traffic from Myspace to other resources. A library profile can be used to link database pages and catalogues, and as a portal to more complete suites and library resources. Many library accounts have links to ‘Ask a Librarian’ which allows patrons to ask reference questions and get immediate answers from work and home computers.
Myspace is often used as a way to facilitate two-way communication with library users.

RSS aggregator

I managed to create a free “RSS aggregator” accounts with both ‘Bloglines’ and ‘Google Reader’. I guess I should now get around to making it work. What I like about ‘RSS feeds’ is how the user can benefit by the aggregation of content from multiple Web sources in one place. I can imagine using this technology in both my personal life and at school, especially in terms of limiting shared resources to those who are given the address. It will be ideal to use ‘RSS aggregators’ when giving students assignments.

My virtual shelf

I found the ‘LibraryThing’ quite a treat. I placed 16 books onto my ‘virtual shelf’. All the books I entered are among my favourites and most memorable. It was no surprise to find that most of the books were also popular with other members of this virtual book club. My user name is ‘djbutler65′ if anyone wants to check it out. I will endeavour to construct a widget to ‘Library Thing’ on my blog.
